The Burnham-On-Sea area could get its first snowfall of this winter later today (Tuesday) when a spell of wintry weather is forecast to sweep through.
The Met Office says Burnham could see its first covering of snow for two years this evening. The last snow fell in Burnham in January 2013.
Sleet and snow may hit the Burnham-On-Sea area overnight and into Wednesday morning.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow across the South West, including Burnham, and has asked motorists to take care in dangerous driving conditions.
A Met Office spokesman said: “A cold westerly airstream will spread across the area on Tuesday evening, allowing frequent showers in the overnight period to fall as snow, especially over high ground. There is some uncertainty over how much snow will settle at low levels, and many places within the yellow area may miss the snow altogether. However, where snow does occur it is likely to be heavy and produce a covering quite quickly.”
“Coastal areas facing west or southwest will probably miss most of the snow, but hail and lightning will be hazards here, along with gusty winds.”
The Met Office has also issued a severe weather warning for gales of up to 75mph on Wednesday with and heavy rain likely to raise the flooding risk.
“A spell of heavy rainfall is expected across many parts of western and southern England and Wales in association with this system, lasting from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday morning, when clearer, colder weather is expected to spread southeast,” it says.
Residents have been asked to be aware of the risk of localised disruption to transport and power supplies. The weather will then turn wintry again later in the week with a renewed risk of wintry showers.
