Burnham-On-Sea Town Council’s gritting spreader was in operation in the town centre for the first time on Friday.
The yellow grit spreader sits on the back of an existing council truck to convert it into a gritting lorry and was bought with Sedgemoor District Council in 2011, as reported here, to help spread road salt during heavy snow.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Our gritter and salting machine based in the Sedgemoor depot here in Burnham is spreading grit in the High Street, Marine Drive, The Esplanade and Stoddens Road.”
She added that street cleaning has been suspended so that the cleaners can be tasked with manually spreading salt in main thoroughfares in the town centre.
She added: “Somerset County Council, Sedgemoor District Council and the Town Council are working together to ensure that firstly as much help and support as practicable is given and, secondly, to help residents and businesses to help themselves.”
“To this end grit bins are installed at strategic points in both Burnham and Highbridge and residents are encouraged to use this grit to keep as many pavements and roads clear as possible.”
“A limited stock of grit is also available from the Town Council’s offices in Jaycroft Road, Burnham and, provided it is safe for the Town Council’s handyman to do so, bags can be delivered to residential areas to assist residents or collected from Jaycroft Road.”
The Town Council offices are manned from 8.30am today so residents who are experiencing difficulties can contact the Town Clerk on 01278 788088 and every effort will be made to help anyone in need.
