Town Council provides grit bins in Burnham and Highbridge

-

The council says it is working alongside Sedgemoor District Council and Somerset County Council to try and keep roads and pavements as safe as possible during this week’s snow.

Grit bins have been placed at Victoria Street, near the Pier Street traffic lights, and in Market Street, Highbridge outside the library, and in Pepperall Road, Highbridge near the entrance to the doctors’ surgery.

Town Council Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the bins have been filled by Somerset County Council from its grit/salt supplies.

Eileen added: “The Burnham grit bin locations were chosen to assist with maintaining access to the shops and the Post Office. Love Lane is gritted regularly by the County Council as a major route, thereby also ensuring reasonable access to the doctors’ surgery.”

“In Highbridge, the Market Street location was chosen to help keep access to the shops and the station safe. The grit bins in Pepperrall Road are intended to help keep access to the doctor’s surgery.”

“These bins are provided to help local traders and residents with self-help to keep the shops and other essential services accessible, and the Town Handyman will help grit these locations when it is safe for him to do so.”

She added that Somerset County Council has also provided a fresh supply of grit and sand to the Sedgemoor District Council depot in Oxford Street, which staff will use to grit main public thoroughfares, staff levels permitting.
