Burnham-On-Sea could get its first sprinkling of snow over the next week if weather forecasts prove accurate.
The Met Office says temperatures will plunge during the next few days, as wintry weather sweeps into our area.
A spokesman for the Met Office said temperatures would be below average, falling to -4°c at night, with sharp overnight frosts.
Severe weather warnings for snowfall have been issued for South Wales on Friday and southern England on Saturday – with light wintry showers also expected in our area. The cold snap will continue into next week when further snow is possible.
Burnham-On-Sea’s last major snowfall was in January this year, when the town was covered in the white stuff – much to the delight of youngsters.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Andy Page said: “There is no doubt that the UK will see much colder conditions by the end of the week. Snow will be a risk for many.”
Somerset County Council has been taking deliveries of road salt since the summer to make sure that its salt barns are stocked with 7,000 tonnes of salt.
Cllr Harvey Siggs, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Every year, Somerset County Council carries out a review of its winter services, and plans ahead for the following year. After last year’s worst winter for 30 years, we reviewed our plans and are as prepared as we can be for any snow and ice that might hit the county.”
