A huge crowd of 3,000 speedway fans converged on Highbridge’s Oaktree Arena last night (Friday) when Sky TV broadcast a top live meeting from the track.
The Premier League Pairs Championship fixture, widely seen as one of the highlights of the British speedway calendar, was shown live on Sky Sports and drew crowds of spectators.
The Oaktree’s Bill Hancock, pictured with Sky’s Charlie Webster, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re delighted to have seen such a big turnout for this special fixture and we’re honoured that it was broadcast live to millions of viewers on Sky.”
The night saw the Edinburgh Monarchs crowned the 2014 Premier League Pairs Champions with the Somerset Rebels the runners-up.
“Coverage like this is great for the Burnham and Highbridge area in terms of publicity alone but it is also brings in extra trade into the area with local guesthouses and B&Bs busier than normal,” added Bill.
The Premier League Pairs Championship brings together two out of the top three riders from 10 of the 13 clubs which comprise The Premier League.
