Burnham-On-Sea’s skating rink has opened for the Christmas holidays with dozens of families heading there to enjoy it.
Organisers from community group Burnham Events Social Team (BEST) say they are pleased with the support shown by locals.
The synthetic plastic skating rink, located on Burnham-On-Sea’s Lynton Road Car Park, was formally opened by Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor, Cllr Bill Hancock, on Saturday alongside Town Crier Alistair Murray and local councillors Peter Clayton, Andy Brewer and Debbie Matthews.
The rink is open daily from December 23rd until January 7th (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day). Entry onto the rink costs £4.00 per person per hour, and the rink is open daily from 11am with the last skate at 4pm, closing at 5pm.
Kathy Jones from BEST told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s great to be open again for the Christmas holidays – we have seen many visitors coming along already.”
BEST’s Peter Clayton added that locals have been giving plenty of support after two break-ins at the skating rink’s marquee over the last few nights, prompting security to be stepped up with CCTV cameras.
He added: “Hundreds of people attended the opening event, and over 140 children and parents partook in skating on the day. We were delighted with the turn out, and all those that took part thoroughly enjoyed it.”
“We received a great deal of praise for all our efforts, and those comments, and the look of joy, on all the children’s faces made it all worth while. I can’t thank my team enough for making this happen, and creating a wonderful facility for our town.”
Mayor Bill Hancock said: “I think this rink is a great asset for the town – it’s wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying themselves at Christmas time!”
A small festive market was set up on the opening day, along with live music from a local choir and singer Ian Kenna.
