The Singing Children of Africa choir performed a sell-out concert in Burnham-On-Sea’s Princess Theatre on Tuesday night (October 23rd), wowing the audience.
Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s Mayor, Cllr Bill Hancock, who was in the audience with his wife, Mayoress Frances Hancock, for Tuesday’s performance, said he was “hugely impressed” with the group.
The Mayor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a fantastic performance – all the singers and organisers are to be congratulated on such a superb evening.”
“I have never seen so many smiling, enthusiastic children together like this before – their voices are truly superb. Thanks go to everyone who supports them.”
The group also performed on Saturday (October 20th) at St Andrew’s Church in Burnham and will be singing in Brent Knoll today.
The children will then be performing for shoppers at the Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol on Saturday October 27th at various times, starting at 11.00am.
“The choir make a welcome return to the area – they were last with us in 2016,” Christine Seddon-Kaye told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The children all attend Jolaurabi School in the Utange area of Kenya. This school is run by the charity Educate the Kids whose mission is to educate children that would otherwise not have a chance of an education.”
“The charity is run entirely by volunteers and every penny raised is used to educate and provide facilities at the school. There are currently 700 children being educated and these children live in desperate poverty and without this chance they would not have any hope of a future.”
“Each child is sponsored by a person in the UK and we have many sponsors in the Somerset area. To sponsor a child costs £11 per month and this provides education, uniform, books, porridge in the morning and rice and beans at lunch time and for some of our children at school this will be the only food they many receive for many days.”
“The children love to sing and when not performing they spend their days in local schools where there a real bond of friendship and collaboration is formed. The children also get the chance to have some fun times thanks to a few local companies, such as tobogganing at Avon ski Centre, Dance classes with Miss Lisa in Highbridge and a pool party at Burnham Holiday Village.”
