Young members of Burnham-On-Sea’s ‘Siobhan Johnson Singers’ performed at the Weston Festival and came away with top marks of distinction with three gold medals, a silver and two bronzes.
Singing against well-seasoned performers from the Weston and Bristol areas, the Burnham group was up against some tough competition.
Hannah Murdoch, 12, right, got the festival off to a great start by wowing the audience with an outstanding honours performance of ‘Popular’ from the musical ‘Wicked’, winning the gold medal with an honours and a mark of 90.
“There was a very high standard and she certainly delivered in setting the standard from the start,” said Siobhan.
Burnham Youth Choir then followed, completely entertaining the adjudicator and entire audience with their delightful and original ‘Disney Mash Up Medley’ which won a Silver Medal and a mark of distinction.
Hannah continued her success by winning a Bronze Medal with her beautiful version of David Foster’s ‘The Prayer.’
Connie Paterson, 8, sang a delightful version of A.A.Milne’s ‘Changing Guards at Buckingham Palace’, winning a mark of distinction and then filling the church with her huge voice as she sang ‘Climb Every Mountain.’
Hannah Murdoch and Rowan Mobsby-Frost raised the energy with their fast-paced and tight choreographed duet of ‘What is This Feeling’ from the musical ‘Wicked’, winning a Gold Medal and mark of Distinction.
Rowan, 14, then exercised her strong light operatic vocal folds winning a Gold medal and mark of distinction, singing David Foster’s stunningly beautiful ‘To Believe’ followed by ‘Truly Scrumptious’ from ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.’
Fiona Williams, 11, concluded the festival and fought hard by winning a Bronze medal and the highest mark of distinction as she sang and acted so professionally ‘Hard Knock Life’ from the musical ‘Annie.’
Siobhan said: “The standard was the highest I have ever seen at a festival and the class sizes were all on the large size. I am so immensely proud of all my singers who not only sang but conducted themselves in a first class manner.”
“Performing at a festival can be a rather formal and scary affair, however great experience for pupils, as they can learn so much in many different ways and the fantastic manner and feedback of the adjudicator, Bryan Husband, is to be highly applauded. He enhanced their time and confidence in such a positive way.”
