Burnham-On-Sea police have this week helped to re-unite a stolen village road sign with its rightful owners on the other side of the country.
The metal sign for Breamore in Hampshire had taken pride of place in the centre of the village for many decades until it mysteriously went missing last year.
Police investigations failed to find any trace of the sign until it recently appeared on auction website eBay, being sold by an East Huntspill man.
Inspector Roger Tolley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The seller, Mr Davey, had innocently bought the sign at an auction and had no idea it was stolen when he put it on eBay.”
“Hampshire Police contacted us last week to ask if we could help recover the sign from Mr Davey, who was understandably quite surprised when we knocked on his door.”
“When he heard it had been stolen, though, he was happy to hand it over. Hampshire Police have given him the full £28 that he was selling the item for.”
Jim Hordle, a PCSO from Hampshire’s Fordingbridge Police Station, visited Burnham to retrieve the sign, as pictured here.
