A clampdown on confusing sign ‘clutter’ is needed in Burnham-On-Sea, town councillors have been told this week.
Alex Turco, representing the Chamber of Trade on the council’s Town Improvements Committee, proposed a number of improvements to pedestrian signs as part of the council’s plans to make the town centre more shopper friendly.
Two signs in Victoria Street and Oxford Street direct pedestrians to the ‘Council Information Point’, even though it closed down over four years ago.
“There’s currently no consistent approach on what the signs are used for – they need to be improved to encourage pedestrian movement and help increase footfall in the shopping area, boosting economic activity,” said Alex.
“A decision is needed on what are the key sign locations to create better footfall through our town centre and what are the key places of interest to be sign-posted.”
The committee agreed to investigate the costs of new ‘finger post’ signs in the town centre ahead of a decision later in the year on whether to use some of the £320,000 of Tesco community funding on the scheme.
