Burnham town centre gets an extra dash of colour thanks to art project

-

A project to turn shopfront shutters in Burnham-On-Sea town centre into colourful pieces of artwork to add an extra dash of colour is underway this month.

Six traders have taken part in the Town Council’s new shop shutters art scheme, which is being partly funded by ‘Tesco 106 funding’ to offset the expansion of its store in the town.

Steel shutters in the High Street and Victoria Street are being decorated with colourful art to try and make the town centre appear more welcoming.

Town Centre Manager Beverley Milner Simonds told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Roller shutters are a necessary part of many businesses insurance requirements – this scheme has shown that they don’t have to be bland steel walls.”

“Many people have spoken positively to the artists over the past three weekends and I hope the majority will appreciate this artistic scheme that aims to lift the town centre ‘look-and-feel’ after normal trading hours.”

She added: “The timeline to get us to paint on shutters has been longer than expected, but I hope that visitors to the town centre will be as pleased with the results as the six traders are.”

The artsists from a firm called Urban Canvas have worked to a tight brief, taking onboard the feedback from the traders to produce a scheme that seeks to imporve the area when the shutters are down.

Four out of the six businesses do not normally trade on a Sunday so people will see the designs during daylight hours.

All the traders have also contributed to the scheme financially and the opportunity was offered to all businesses in Burnham town centre with shutters.

Those traders who have shutters and are not part of the current scheme can register their interest in possible future schemes by contacting Burnham’s Town Centre Manager via the Town Council.
