Net gains to be made by fishing in Burnham the old fashioned way!

-

Calm weather and high tides provided ideal conditions for a once-popular pastime in Burnham-On-Sea this week.

To the bemusement of some beach walkers, Highbridge angling enthusiast Martin Puddy used this unusually-shaped net to catch shrimps near Burnham’s low lighthouse.

When pushed along the sea bottom, the once nets are ideal perfect for finding Bridgwater Bay fish and shrimps.

Martin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “These old-fashioned nets were popular when we were kids.”

“I haven’t used this one for years, but came across it while having a clear out and had to have a go with my children.”

“I’ve actually found they’re still just as good as ever for catching shrimps at this time of the year.”

Over the course of several hours, Martin netted several pounds of shrimps, Dover Sole and Shad.

He added: “It is hard work pushing it along under the water, and you do get a few inquisitive looks from walkers on the beach, but it is rewarding.”
