A number of new businesses are bucking the economic gloom and opening their doors in Burnham-On-Sea.
While many towns across the UK are seeing shops closing down, Burnham has only a handful of shuttered properties – and new businesses are springing up in the town.
Rhonda Mills, Chairman of Burnham Trade and Commerce, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is very heartening to see new firms opening up here despite the poor overall economic climate.”
“While many towns are seeing big chain stores closing their shops, we have a super range of independent shops that make it attractive for visitors and residents.”
Among the latest shops to open is a new takeaway carvery business, Carvery Express, which is due to launch this Sunday (July 10th) on the Westmans Trading Estate in Love Lane.
Owner Adrian Rugman (pictured above) told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve spotted a gap in the market and will be providing take-away beef and turkey dinners every Sunday lunchtime while also raising money for local charities, including the BAY Centre’s roof appeal.”
Meanwhile, a new clothes shop, AG2, has also recently opened in Burnham High Street, selling casual and formal womens clothing.
The shop, run by Asif Ghani and his father, is a spin-off of their Weston shop of the same name. “We see Burnham as a good place to expand our business into. It has been a promising start – there has been a good amount of interest,” said Asif.
Burnham-On-Sea.com can also report further good news this week regarding the store previously occupied by GC Music in College Street.
A new hairdresser is to open in place of the shop.
Graham Cook, pictured, who ran GC Music for 19 years, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been sad to close the shop, but I am pleased that a new business will be opening in its place and that it won’t just be empty. I’m now concentrating on my separate GC Sound and Lighting business instead.”
Meanwhile, new printing company Burnham Printers and Stationers has also recently opened at 45 Victoria Street in place of the former Coastline Print.
Owners Helen Fairchild and Richard Berryman, pictured, have spent almost £10,000 on refitting the premises and told Burnham-On-Sea.com they’ve had a busy start.
“The location of the shop in the ‘business quarter’ of Burnham is ideal and we are pleased with the response from customers so far.”
