Police swooped on a suspected shoplifter in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea today (Wednesday March 2nd) after tracking him through the town using CCTV cameras and a shop-to-shop radio security system.
The man was arrested in Victoria Street, as pictured here by a Burnham-On-Sea.com reader, after allegedly taking a large quantity of clothes from Peacocks in the High Street shortly before 4pm.
Store manager Donna Berry told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Several customers saw the man taking several items including a leather jacket, shirt and jeans before making off.”
“I immediately contacted the Radiolink team who put out an alert to shopkeepers while the CCTV control team tracked the man through the town and kept police informed.”
A short time later, residents near Burnham Post Office in Victoria Street reported seeing officers arrive, as captured here on camera.
The Burnham-On-Sea.com reader said: “It was like a scene from a TV police drama, the police cars caming to an abrupt halt, the officers jumped out, and then arrested him. It was all over very quickly.”
Police spokeswoman Cath Foster confirmed: “We were called at 3.56pm to Peacocks where a man had attempted to steal several items. He was taken into custody a short time later.”
