£8,000 Highbridge shopfront grant scheme aims to smarten up town

-

Highbridge is to get an £8,000 funding injection to improve its town centre shopfronts.

Burnham and Highbridge Town Council last night (Wednesday) pledged to give £4,000 towards the scheme, matching a similiar amount from Sedgemoor District Council.

Mike Murphy of Highbridge Chamber of Trade and Phil Adams from Sedgemoor District Council’s Economic Development Team unveiled the scheme to town councillors at their Policy and Finance Committee meeting.

A dozen shops will initially be able to apply for the funding to upgrade their shop frontages in an effort to improve the look of the town centre.

Mr Murphy explained: “We want a smart, unified street scene in Highbridge – we’ll never be a Cherbourg – but we are trying to improve our image, jointly working with the town council and district council.”

Cllr Janet Keen said: “These are wonderful intentions and would be extremely attractive.”

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton added: “This would really help with the regeneration of Highbridge.”

The Policy and Finance Committee recommended to give funding to the scheme, subject to a final decision by the full Town Council in November.
