A garden centre near Burnham-On-Sea has won a ‘green’ award this week in recognition of its recycling scheme.
Sanders Garden World at Brent Knoll was presented with a ‘Green Initiative of the Year Award’ at a special awards ceremony in Birmingham dedicated to rewarding retail innovation.
Peter Burks, General Manager of Sanders Garden World, who went to the ceremony to receive the award, said: “The category we were entered for was Green Initiative of the Year and it was our in-house and customer-related recycling initiatives that caught the judges’ attention, as well as the fact that we have been running the initiatives for so long.”
“All the staff and management at the garden centre are really pleased with this award and the industry recognition we have received.”
The garden centre has hosted several environmentally-friendly events for customers this year, including a composting weekend and a pot amnesty, where customers could return their unwanted plastic plant pots for recycling.
Each January the centre offers customers the chance to have their traditional Christmas trees mulched for free. In 2007, the centre also worked with a concrete recycling depot and collected broken china/clay pots. The centre is also involved in recycling old Christmas cards and mobile phones for charity.
