Sedgemoor Ramblers from Burnham area present award to Chairman

-

Members of Sedgemoor Ramblers from the Burnham-On-Sea area have awarded their Chairman, Ed Levy, a prestigious ‘Order of the Boot’ award.

The accolade, made in recognition of Ed’s outstanding contribution as an active member of the Sedgemoor Ramblers, was recently presented at the group’s AGM.

Ed has been a local Rambler since 2004, and during that time has been instrumental in leading walks, organising away days, organising walking holidays at home and abroad, coordinating the extensive walking programme and being an all-round good guy.

Ed thanked the group, saying: “Once Coronavirus has passed, we should hold a celebratory walk where attendance is unlimited and where there are plenty of eats and drinks on the way!”

“I hope that will come about in the not-too-distant future.”

To find out more about the walks on the current programme and how to join in, check out the website at www.sedgemoorramblers.co.uk

Sedgemoor Ramblers is a group within the national Ramblers charity, which operates both on a local and national level and aims to encourage walking, to protect and maintain rights of way, increase access to open countryside and the coast, and to defend the beauty of the countryside.

Somerset has one of the longest rights of way networks in the country, with over 9000 routes totalling 3808 miles.

The Ramblers work to protect these footpaths, bridleways and byways that the public has a right to use, and there are lots of opportunities for people to get involved in helping to maintain our local paths and protect access to our countryside.

As well as organising walks to suit all levels of fitness, Sedgemoor Ramblers has a small team of pro-active volunteers who work with Somerset County Council to carry out maintenance, path clearing, installation of new stiles, gates, bridges and finger posts.

If you want to lend a hand, no special skills are required other than the enthusiasm to undertake work to improve the rights of way network.

On-the-job training can be given, and a variety of free training courses are available.

For information on how to get involved, see the website www.sedgemoorramblers.co.uk or email: sedgemoor.ramblers@gmail.com

Meanwhile, there is also a vacancy for a Parish Paths Liaison Officer for Burnham and Highbridge. Anyone interested in applying should contact the TC at info@burnham-highbridge-tc.gov.uk
