Local groups and individuals in Burnham-On-Sea have received financial boosts from Sedgemoor District Council this week.
Several grants across the district have been announced following the authority’s latest Grants Committee meeting.
Burnham Area Youth Centre has been awarded £1,500 to repair the upper roof of its building in Cassis Close, Burnham.
“The centre’s upper roof badly needs refurbishment to avoid serious problems in the future with water leaking into the building,” the centre’s Chairman Mike Lang told Burnhamn-On-Sea.com. “We’ve been holding off on the work for many years but it’s now becoming urgent.”
Burnham-On-Sea Motor Boat and Sailing Club received £1,250 to help support the purchase of a second training gig to enable the club to meet demand.
The club’s Graham Wills recently told Burnham-on-Sea.com that a new £15,500 boat is being sought due to the group’s popularity. “We have been overwhelmed with interest since last year’s launch of our first boat,” he said. “We have around 70 members and need a second gig due to the interest.”
In Charley’s Memory was awarded £2,500 to support two of the mental health charities main projects. One is a new ‘lads and dads’ activity day and the second is a young ambassadors scheme.
The group is named after Charley Marks, 18, who took his own life in September 2014. A charity was set up in his name, supporting young people and those affected by mental health.
Burnham-On-Sea’s Hannah Bird was awarded £500 to replace her water-ski which is used by her at European World waterskiing races.
Hannah is a lifeguard at Burnham-On-Sea Swim & Sports Academy and, as a keen water skier, is bidding to qualify for the World Championships in 2017 and is the current GB and European Champion in her age group.
£180 was awarded to the 290 Squadron Detachment for Burnham and Highbridge. The funding will enable it to purchase six VHF transceivers since previous kit has reached an end of life.
