A wildlife rescue centre near Burnham-On-Sea says it has seen over 250 animals brought in already this month.
Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill carers are finding that many are orphans who need help.
They include all sorts of birds – from baby blackbirds to tawny owlets – to robins and tiny baby sparrows.
“The orphan room here at Secret World is getting busier as we see more young animals sadly in need of our help”, Animal Carer Dan Bryant told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We will hand rear them until they can feed themselves, then we’ll help them learn to survive on their own.”
“Some orphans are brought in unnecessarily”, adds Dan. “If you do find a young wild animal please call us for advice before moving it – unless it is in immediate danger or injured, in which case please move it to safety before calling us.”
The centre will be opening from 23rd to 25th May to let the general public meet some of the latest arrivals, and to find out how they are hand-reared and are prepared for their eventual release back into the wild.
The Wildlife Babies weekend over the late May bank holiday weekend is a chance for the public to learn about the wildlife that is all around us at this time of year, and how they can help protect it.
There will be lots to see and do at the Wildlife Babies weekend, with specialist talks taking place and a chance to meet some of the other animals cared for on the site. There will also be special interest stalls, activities for children, the hilarious ferret racing, on site catering and much more going on each day. Opening times will be 10am-4pm on 23-25 May. Entry is free with donations welcome.
