Beaches in Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow have today (Wednesday) been handed sought-after awards by national campaign group Keep Britain Tidy.
The Seaside Awards scheme highlights the best beaches across England that achieve the highest standards of facilities and cleanliness.
Sedgemoor District Council, which oversees the beaches, has welcomed news of the 2015 Seaside Awards.
Its Chairman, Cllr Peter Downing, will formally receive the award flag during a ceremony being held today on Burnham seafront.
Sedgemoor District Council spokesperson Sam Taylor said: “Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have once again received the Seaside Award for both of the beaches that we manage.”
“At a time when more and more people are choosing to holiday in the UK, the growth of visitors, alongside residents, enjoying our delightful and dramatic coastline has highlighted not only the demand but the continued importance of presenting and retaining clean, attractive and well-managed beaches.”
“Although Seaside Award beaches can often be very different, they are a symbol of quality which guarantee to residents and visitors that the beach is one of the best in the country.”
“Sedgemoor District Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the beach team for their excellent work in continuing to manage the beaches effectively.”
Beach cleanliness has been in the spotlight this week after we reported here that several residents are unhappy at the levels of litter left after beach parties in the sand dunes to the north of Burnham lighthouse. The council is set to embark on a clean-up there.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Seaside Award scheme celebrates the quality and diversity of England’s coastline. Formerly called the Quality Coast Award, the scheme is the nationwide standard for the best beaches across the UK.
