A team of a dozen Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea were called out in the early hours of Wednesday (October 1st) to search for a missing man who had been reported by his parents to be in a ‘distressed’ state.
Coastguards rushed to Brean at 3am after the 28-year-old holidaymaker was reported missing by his family.
“His concerned family had begun their own search of the beach after finding he had gone missing from the caravan park where the family was staying,” Burnham Coastguard Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The parents contacted their daughter in Birmingham by mobile phone to let her know that he was missing and she was so concerned about the situation that she contacted Coastguards.”
In gale-force winds and driving rain, the Burnham team first conducted a search of the beach to locate the parents. When they were found, a wide search of the sand dunes opposite Brean Leisure Park was conducted for the missing man.
An RAF rescue helicopter from Chivenor in Devon was also called to the scene to join the search.
Mr Bird added: “We used parachute flares to illuminate the dunes and after an extensive search the man was found at around 4.30am. He was cold and damp, but otherwise unhurt.”
It is the second incident involving missing persons in Brean this week. On Monday, a boy went missing and was successfully found.
