Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has this week been handed a petition signed by dozens of caravan owners demanding action on speeding problems along the town’s seafront.
The petition, handed to Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, has been signed by 65 people at Burnham Holiday Village in support of plans to introduce traffic calming along the Southern Esplanade to try and halt the problem of anti-social driving.
“It is another indication of the strength of feeling there is over this matter,” Burnham’s Mayor told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
It comes after a meeting was held in Bridgwater last Friday when town councillors met with the County and District Councils and police to discuss a range of proposals, including proposals to convert the Esplanade into a new ‘leisure drive’.
“A full and frank discussion was had about the situation,” said Cllr Neville Jones. “Three options are now on the table and we’re hoping to have a meeting with Jill Shortland of the county council in the coming weeks to explore these further.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in September how Cllr Neville Jones had gained the majority support of members of Sedgemoor District Council for a new ‘leisure drive’ to be created along the Esplanade to try and combat the problems of anti-social driving.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported in August that Somerset County Council’s Head of Highways, Ioan Rees, had stated “traffic calming of the South Esplanade would have a very low priority for funding from Highways budgets” and added that that the low number of accidents along the seafront means there is no argument for changes.
Seafront residents claim, however, that the situation is so bad that an accident is waiting to happen. Ian Halsley described the problem of noisy motorists as “a living hell”.
