Burnham-On-Sea residents "horrified" at loss of heritage as shelter goes

-

Sedgemoor District Council has this week defended its decision to demolish an “underused” shelter on Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront despite criticism from some nearby residents that the town’s “heritage” is being lost.

The council says the shelter, on the South Esplanade between Quantock Court and the Yacht Club, was in a poor state of repair.

Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “An underused shelter with limited views at the end of Burnham-On-Sea Esplanade has been demolished. It was in a relatively poor state and a condition survey showed that it required about £4,000 of remedial work.”

“Its position made it less desirable to the majority of Esplanade and beach users. It has been entirely removed and the area will be returned to grass.”

“This will allow our limited resources to refurbish other shelters situated along the South Esplanade with sea views. Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council were consulted and in agreement.”

However, nearby resident Paul Hambleton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am horrified at the loss of yet more of Burnham’s heritage without any public consultation and I am sure that I’m not alone in holding this opinion.”

“I think that we would all agree that the shelters have been allowed to get into a very poor condition but what is required is restoration, not demolition, as they still serve their intended purpose. At the very least we should be made aware of what is happening to the publicly owned fabric of our town.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: “Personally, I think the removal of the shelters is long overdue – I hope they are replaced with something a more modern and that the councils will consult with seafront residents on the design.”
