Part of Burnham-On-Sea’s South Esplanade is to be resurfaced… but it won’t get a controversial golden colour tarmac that was originally discussed earlier this year.
Sedgemoor District Council said this week that a new black tarmac surface is to be introduced between the jetty and pilot hut building, replacing the current cracking surface, right.
Back in March, town councillors controversially picked a ‘golden glow’ coloured surface rather than terracotta or grey, and the decision provoked criticism from residents, prompting the council to re-consider its choice.
Spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Following on from the ‘patching’ repairs to The Esplanade at the end of the summer in 2014, permanent repair works will commence to resurface part of The Esplanade between the Pilot Hut and Jetty Hut on Monday 23rd November. The work is scheduled to last between 7-10 days, weather permitting.”
“The repairs are necessary as the current surface is showing wear and tear. Crumbling tarmac will be replaced by standard-coloured tarmac.”
The council added that new benches and bins will be installed at the same time, making a total project cost of £46,000. Appropriate barriers and signage will be put in place for pedestrians.
“The works are being done now, rather than in the Spring, due to the earliness of the Easter holidays, which run from March 24th until April 11th,” explained Mrs Faun.
