The multi-coloured LED lights are to be trialled on the South Esplanade in a bid to find a low-cost replacement for the previous decorative lights which were removed earlier this year.
A Sedgemoor District Council spokesperson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “An order has been placed for the lights and they are due to be installed over the next 3-4 weeks.”
The lights are being trialled after local resident Nick Whetstone proposed them to the Town Council to replace the town’s aging seafront illuminations.
If the trial is successful, all the seafront lamps could be replaced with the coloured LED units, as pictured above, cutting the council’s power bill by up to 85%.
A Town Council spokeswoman said: “Once the three new trial lights are in place, a number of tests will be undertaken to establish whether they generate sufficient light on the pavements and highway.”
The trial was orginally due to go ahead last year, but the Town Council had been warned by the harbourmaster had warned the proposed lights “could cause confusion to shipping” since some of the lights are the same colour as warning navigation buoys.
However, harbourmaster John Stone later said he would not object to the trial, providing the safety of the lights is assessed.
