Trial begins of colourful new Burnham seafront decorative lights

-

A trial of new decorative lights along Burnham-On-Sea seafront has got underway this week.

The new LED lights, which change colour, have been installed along the raised walkway on the South Esplanade near Burnham Sailing Club.

The lights are being trialed after Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here that resident Nick Whetstone had proposed the town’s former decorative seafront illuminations should be replaced by the LED lights to reduce costs.

It is claimed that the new LED lights could cut the council’s power bill by up to 85% on the seafront.

The trial was due to go ahead last year, but the harbourmaster warned that the lights “could cause confusion to shipping” since some are the same colour as warning navigation buoys which led to a further safety assessment.

Town councillors voted in favour of installing the multi-coloured LED lights on the South Esplanade at a cost of £420 on a trial basis. A spokeswoman said the new lights would be tested to establish whether they generate sufficient light on pavements before the use of the lights is potentially widened to cover more of the seafront.
