The introduction of temporary roadside barriers along lay-bys on Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront has been so successful in halting groups of ‘boy racers’ congregating there that permanent bollards are this week being installed.
The plastic bollards were introduced last December following concern from residents about anti-social driving and late night noise.
They are now being replaced with metal bollards to block off the lay-bys.
Their introduction comes after Somerset County Council’s Highways Department was asked to improve the appearance of the lay-bys before the summer tourist season.
Cllr Neville Jones told March’s town council meeting: “Sealing off the lay-bys has stopped large congregations of vehicles gathering and has been successful in reducing anti-social driving.”
“We just want something more sympathetic than bright red and white bollards which will better blend in with the surroundings.”
