The quality of bathing water in Burnham-On-Sea has been tested by the Environment Agency this week as its launched a new study into the effects of water running into the sea from the River Brue.
Water samples have been taken on three high tides from south of the town’s jetty and from near Burnham Pier, as pictured here.
Environment Agency spokesman Mike Dunning told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Two agency officers have been undertaking the sampling in Burnham and are investigating whether the River Brue has any impact on bathing water quality in Burnham.”
“The town normally meets mandatory quality bathing standards, but occasionally the quality dips and does not quite meet higher standards.”
He added: “We’re studying whether there are any pollutants in the Brue which are impacting water bathing quality.”
The results of the study will be announced by the Environment Agency later in the year.
Burnham won a sought-after Quality Coast Award for the quality of its beaches earlier this year and sea water quality is also frequently praised in independent studies.
