Bathing water quality in Burnham-On-Sea, Berrow and Brean has been highlighted in a nationwide survey published on Friday (May 23rd).
The findings of the annual study were released on Friday morning by the Marine Conservation Society and are being published in the 2008 Good Beach Guide.
Burnham, Brean and Berrow have all been awarded a ‘Basic Pass’, which is given to beaches who pass EC mandatory standards for water quality.
It’s a poorer result for Brean and Berrow compared to last year, both of which achieved ‘recommended’ status in 2007, which is the Marine Conservation Society’s highest water quality standard given to those beaches which show good treatment of sewage discharges.
The news comes after Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report a week ago how the poor quality of our beaches has been plunged into the spotlight by local councillors.
Nationally, there has been a 10 per cent drop in the number of bathing beaches recommended for excellent water quality in the annual Good Beach Guide, compared to last year.
In total, 443 (57%) UK beaches are ‘MCS Recommended’ this year out of 778 tested, compared to 495 last year. This is the biggest year-on-year fall in the Good Beach Guide’s 21 year history.
