Sea water quality in Burnham, Brean and Berrow has been given the stamp of approval by DEFRA (The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) in a national survey announced on Thursday, November 9th.
Bathing water quality was tested at the beaches during a study in which Environment Agency staff took 20 samples of water between May and September.
Their results found water quality at Burnham Jetty (pictured), Berrow north of Unity Farm and Brean all achieved a pass.
The survey also concluded that bathing water at Brean and Berrow achieved the more stringent guideline standards for total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci, as well as the mandatory standard. Achieving this is one of the requirements for a beach to be awarded a Blue Flag.
“We are absolutely delighted with this year’s results and want to congratulate everyone involved in this success,” said Geoff Boyd, the Environment Agency’s strategy manager for the south west.
