Burnham sea cadets bring home the silverware at drill competition

-

Sea cadets from Burnham-On-Sea have got off to a winning start in their bid to retain the national drill and ceremonial competition title.

The enthusiastic cadets won all of the trophies in their category in the Somerset and Dorset district competition at the weekend.

The event is normally won or lost by a small handful of points but the Burnham cadets won by 99 points over the second-placed team.

Petty Officer Cadet Matt Tutton, the Squad Commander, won the Best Squad Commander trophy and Able Cadet Imogen Howard won the Best Dressed Cadet with the team winning the overall event.

Training started before Christmas and the cadets have dedicated additional time to practice their routine while also working on the presentation of their uniforms.

Commanding Officer Lieutenant Bob Silverthorne says he is “immensely proud” of the cadets, especially as several of them are fairly new and have integrated extremely well.

“We now look forward to the South West Area competition at HMS Raleigh over the weekend of 16th-17th March and will be training hard to do Burnham proud,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

They won the national event last year and will be hoping they can repeat their success in 2013.

Any young people aged 10-18 who are interested in becoming part of the successful unit should either contact the group at kim84@tiscali.co.uk or by calling in on a Monday or Thursday evening between 7pm and 9.30pm.
