Sedgemoor District Council has this week published a new report outlining how Burnham-On-Sea could grow and change in the future – and the council wants the opinions of residents.
As part of its work to develop a Local Development Framework (LDF), the Council has published a Core Strategy report – available here – which suggests how Burnham and other local towns might develop in the future over the next 20 years.
The proposals include creating 1,000 new jobs, launching a huge new flood prevention scheme, restoring Burnham’s regeneration project, plus building 1,300 extra homes.
An eight week formal consultation period is now underway, ending on 24th November, for local people to make comments and suggestions.
A range of consultation events, including two exhibitions, will be held during October and November. In Burnham, a display will be held on October 23rd and October 24th in the foyer of Morrisons in Pier Street from 10am-4pm. A further event will be held at Asda in Highbridge on November 6th and 7th from 10am-4pm.
The results of this consultation will help preparation of a draft plan due to be published next summer.
Councillor Andrew Gilling, Portfolio Holder for Development Management, pictured right, said: “These are exciting and challenging times for Sedgemoor. Boosting our economy to provide more jobs, providing good quality housing so that everyone has a decent place to live and coping with the challenges of climate change and flooding are just some of our priorities over the next two decades.”
“The Core Strategy is one of the key tools that the Council can use to achieve these aims and publication of the Preferred Options Report is a significant step forward.”
“As the Councillor responsible for the LDF, I am working closely with the Members LDF Working Party and with the LDF Team to ensure that, with your input, the LDF gives us positive planning policies that will build on the District’s many strengths to help shape a Sedgemoor fit for the 21st Century.”
