Members of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Choral Society have this week taken part in ‘Bristol Scratch Orchestra’ to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.
The local singers performed in a choir of 250 people and an orchestra of 300 at the Colston Hall in Bristol, with a TV crew from BBC Points West filming the end result.
A ‘scratch’ event sees the singers and musicians printing their own music, learning it at home, then arriving on the day at 8.30am to rehearse and then perform it all at 4pm in a free concert.
The audience members were invited to place donations into the Cancer Research bucket. The event has been going for many years and has raised a huge total of £45,000.
This year’s event included a light stick rendition of ‘Wimawa’ with audience participation, as pictured above.
Unknown to the people taking part, the TV camera crew filmed a segment of the concert for the evening news – helping to spread the word about it.
“The Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society members enjoy the challenge that this day brings,” the group’s Julie Skinner told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We enjoy the camaraderie between the different singers and musicians – there’s also a lot of laughter – and we all had a fantastic day.”
The Choral Society’s annual concert will be held on Saturday 29th April in St John’s Church, Highbridge.
This concert will feature music from around Europe, with Guest soloist Rhodri Prys Jones performing.
