Berrow pensioners given advice on beating doorstep crime and scams

-

A unique event was held in Berrow on Monday (March 17th) when a group of residents were given advice about avoiding the dangers of doorstep crime.

Berrow Active Living Group was visited by the Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) and police from the Berrow Beat Team for a safety advice session.

The bustling group of 25 older adults took part in a 40-minute, interactive safety presentation that was themed around avoiding the dangers of doorstep crime, as well as scams and cons.

The session included tips on avoiding the annoyance of unsolicited phone calls by registering with the telephone preference service, as well as help on safe doorstep procedures and being aware of the legal requirements around cold-callers offering unsolicited goods and services.

SCLT volunteer Ash Jones gave the presentation and said: “It has been great meeting the members of this community group. The enthusiasm for independent living is tangible and by passing-on this safety advice, we hope that the SCLT will enable many older adults to remain in their homes, feeling safer, for long into the future.”

All the attendees also received a copy of the latest edition of the Senior Siren magazine, available online here, which is full of senior safety tips and advice on staying safe at home and when out and about.

If your community group would like a visit from the SCLT Public Presentation Team, get in touch via Burnham Police on the non-emergency number 101.
