New name for merged Highbridge schools is announced

-

The name for the amalgamated St John’s and Beechfield Schools was chosen over the past week at a special governors meeting.

Beechfield’s headteacher Sheelagh Aslett, pictured, who is retiring at the end of this term after more than 20 years, has written to parents this week confirming the changes.

In the letter, she writes: “Following a temporary governing body meeting, I thought you would like to know the name for our new school has been decided with guidance from the Diocese. The school is to be known as ‘Churchfield VC Primary’ from 1st September.”

She added: “We now need your help in choosing the colour for our uniform. Perhaps you could discuss with your child what might be really practical and suit children from 4-11 years of age. We would also like children to design a logo for the new school.”

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com last year, the merger of Beechfield Infants School and St John’s Church of England Junior School in Burnham Road was given the go-ahead by Somerset County Council. The newly amalgamated school will open after this year’s summer holidays in September 2010.

Included in the proposal is a plan to replace the current infants and junior school buildings with a brand new 14-class school, which is to be built on the current site at a cost of £6.3 million. The new school building is planned to open in September 2012.

The proposals generally received positive feedback, although a 33-name petition was presented to the council in opposition last September.
