A former Mayor of Burnham-On-Sea last night (Wednesday) urged town councillors not to allow green land to be “decimated” by the building of new homes.
Neville Jones told councillors: “I urge you to do everything you can to prevent building on Burnham’s green land as you come in from the motorway.”
“It’s such a great shame that Sedgemoor is even thinking of building on that land – it’s part of our heritage.”
He added: “Some 40 years ago I was reponsible for putting in some of the trees to make Queen’s Drive such a pleasant run as you come into Burnham-On-Sea.”
“What an appalling thing it would be if all you could see when you drive into Burnham is people’s back gardens from the new homes.”
“You cannot allow building on Burnham’s back garden – you will decimate the attractivenes.”
His comments come as Burnham and Highbridge town councillors consider proposals in Sedgemoor District Council’s Local Plan.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last month how thousands of new homes could be built in Burnham and Highbridge under plans unveiled for the future of the town.
The council’s plan, right, outlines how potential new development across Sedgemoor would take place up to the year 2032.
The Council has produced a consultation document and is currently inviting comments until December 18th, after which the Local Plan will be re-drafted, incorporating the changes, and published for further consultation next year. It will then be subject to examination by planning inspectors.
The consultation document, initial Sustainability Appraisal Report and other relevant supporting documents, can be found on the Council’s website here or at the Sedgemoor District Council Offices, Bridgwater House, Kings Square, Bridgwater, TA6 3AR Monday to Friday – 9:00am to 5.00pm.
