Huge supports for new Burnham Sailing Club pontoons winched into place
A huge crane towered over Burnham-On-Sea this week as work got underway to double the number of berths for yachts and boats at the town’s Sailing Club.
Rising demand for additional moorings at the mouth of the River Brue has prompted the expansion, as we first reported earlier this year.
On Tuesday (October 4th) a team of workmen took advantage of the high tides and calm weather to use a crane floating on a barge to hammer two huge pylons into position.
The 250ft tall pillars will act as the supports for new walkways and moorings which are to be added to the structure in coming weeks.
The newly expanded facility should then be ready to open during November, and the berths are likely to be snapped up quickly according to the Sailing Club.
President Tony Winterburn told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There’s plenty of demand for the extra berths. The new pontoons will enable eight to ten extra boats to moor up.”
