New £100,000 grandstand is opened at Burnham-On-Sea Rugby Club

-

Burnham-On-Sea Rugby Club formally opened a new £100,000 grandstand at its ground in the town on Saturday (February 28th).

The 114-seat covered grandstand has been built at the BASC ground with the help of major grant funding from several partners.

£78,587 was received from Sedgemoor District Council’s RLT3 developer contributions fund, while Viridor Credits gave £19,646 to the project, with the remainder of the £102,000 coming from the club itself.

Burnham Rugby Club President Michael O’Farrell and Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt cut a ribbon to officially open the grandstand, pictured right, watched by club members and supporters. Michael thanked all those who had helped to make the project a success.

Project Manager Neil McKen told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am very pleased to see the new all-weather grandstand open. It’s a big investment for our club that really improves the facilities for spectators.”

Sedgemoor District Council Chairman Peter Downing said the authority is happy to have helped, adding: “We’ve been long-time backers of the BASC Ground – we made the initial loan in 1975 to get it started – and it’s good to see it going from strength to strength.”

Mayor Martin Cox told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am delighted to see these new facilities open which will benefit . It’s great to see such a vibrant and well-supported club doing so well.”

And MP Tessa Munt added: “I think this grandstand is absolutely fantastic. The club has done a brilliant job with this local money. Viridor are always so supportive of community projects like this.”
