Council bosses have apologised to residents in Burnham-On-Sea after overflowing waste bins spilled rubbish across the seafront this week.
Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun said the council had to deal with an “unprecedented” amount of rubbish along The Esplanade following the Easter holiday weekend.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Sedgemoor District Council apologises for the unprecedented amount of rubbish along The Esplanade early on Tuesday morning.”
“The lovely weather on Monday kept visitors at the beach and in the town for much longer than usual, which was good for businesses.”
“The last clean through/collection was made in the late afternoon on Monday and cleaning workers started at 7am on Tuesday morning. Plans will be put in place for the next bank holidays to ensure that there are staff on-call should the situation look like it is deteriorating.”
One local resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It was an awful scene first thing on Tuesday – the council clearly should look at whether it needs to spend more on extra rubbish bins or changing its collection times during holiday periods.”
