The layout of this controversial roundabout in Burnham-On-Sea looks set to remain unchanged after town councillors this week reviewed its safety record and hailed its introduction as a success.
Councillors decided at a meeting on Wednesday night (October 13th) that the ‘temporary trial’ roundabout at the junction of Pepperall Road and Burnham Road should become permanent.
It was introduced last year at the same time as the opening of the nearby Frank Foley Parkway and prompted an outcry from local residents who were angry at the loss of parking spaces along Burnham Road and raised fears about safety.
However, at Wednesday’s meeting of the town council’s Town Improvements Committee, members said the new layout has been a success.
Cllr Dennis Davey said: “There is scope for better signage leading up to it, but I feel it has been a success overall.”
And Cllr Eric Gill, Chairman of the committee, added: “It is working well – the parking of cars along Pepperall Road, just off the roundabout, seems to have actually helped to slow the traffic down.”
Cllr Neville Jones also noted there had been no serious accidents at the roundabout since it was introduced.
Somerset County Council has asked the town council whether the traffic regulation order which led to the roundabout being introduced can become permanent.
