Budding young Burnham-On-Sea chefs battled it out on Thursday evening (November 15th) when they took part in the nationwide Rotary Club Young Chef Of The Year cooking competition.
Seven students from King Alfred School aged 14-16 were asked to prepare a healthy, two-course meal comprising a main course and a dessert. They were allowed 15 minutes preparation time and 90 minutes to cook their meal.
The event, organised locally by Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club, was held in King Alfred School’s Food Technology department and was watched by around 30 Rotary Club members and guests via a video link in an adjacent room.
The winner, Natalie Peeke (pictured right), received the winner’s cup, and goes through to the district round of the event next March, alongside second-placed Kelly Linthorne.
In third spot was Aaron Stokes and the runners-up were Dean Larcombe, Will Ballard, Joe Keirle and Thomas Shakespeare, who all received certificates.
Rotary President Colin Durston presented the RCH Brewery Cup, which was given to the Rotary Club by Dennis Davey, to the winner.
The two judges, Scott Pring, Head Chef at Bridgwater College, and Phil Sullivan, the Head Chef at The Battleborough Grange, praised the high standard of entries.
Organiser Carol Chambers told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There has been an excellent standard of entries on show here today with a superb range of healthy dishes. Our congratulations go to everyone who took part.”
Burnham Rotary Club spokesman George Moon said: “So often we are only shown the negative side of teenagers – it was good to see the positive side showing enthusiasm and dedication.”
