New commemorative wall unveiled in Highbridge’s Apex Park

-

A commemorative wall has been unveiled in Highbridge’s Apex Park to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Overseen by Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club and Burnham-On-Sea Dreamscheme, the ‘s-shaped’ wall has been constructed next to the main car park.

The Rotary Club undertook the design and construction of the wall to mark not only the Jubilee but also in recognition of the work that the young people of Burnham Dreamscheme do in aid of the local community.

The project was managed by the Rotary Club Jim Tancock and Mike Squire. Jim told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “First and second year apprentices from Bridgwater College undertook the building of the wall as part of their construction training, and the young men worked through all weathers to complete the task on time to a very high standard.”

“During April, around 30 young people from Burnham Dreamscheme made and hand-painted 96 ceramic tiles bearing their interpretations of the ‘Queen’s Crown’, which have been inserted into both faces of the wall.”

“A commemorative Diamond Jubilee plaque is also built into the brick face on each elevation. There are two more plaques, one highlighting the Rotary Club, The Dreamscheme and Bridgwater College. A further one names the sponsoring suppliers who generously gave cash and materials.”

“A seat will be provided on each side to enable visitors to Apex Park to rest and admire the views, and the Rotary Club are awaiting the materials’ delivery to manufacture them.”

Major contributions were given by Ashley Edwards, Bridgwater College Building Construction Apprentices, Bill Hancock, Brandon Hire, Burnham Fire Brigade, Burnham Funeral Services, Colin Durston, CRS Building Supplies, Dreamscheme Members, David Lemon, Dulhorn Farm Holiday Park, Di’Mascios, Burnham & Highbridge Town Council (Cash Grant), Jewson Ltd, Louise Squire Designer, Lympsham Concrete, Mark Priddis Groundworks, Sedgemoor District Council (Cash Grant), Travis-Perkins, Topps Tiles and Viridor Waste Management.
