Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club’s popular book shop is to re-open this week as part of a fundraising drive to support a campaign to wipe out polio.
The former Threshers Wine shop in College Street will be open throughout half-term week with the proceeds of book sales being donated to Rotary International’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.
Since 1988, Rotary International has been working to wipe out polio and, with the help of partners such as the World Health Organisation, is 99 per cent of the way there.
“The week of February 20th-27th is Rotary ‘End Polio Now’ week to raise public awareness of the issues and to raise funds to provide the vaccines and medication necessary finally to eradicate the disease,” Burnham Rotary Club’s George Moon told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“In 1985, there were 350,000 cases of the crippling disease in 125 countries; now the spread is down to four countries and only a few thousand cases a year, thanks largely to vaccination. The ‘End Polio Now’ campaign aims to make a final push to rid the world of polio once and for all.”
The Rotary Club’s book shop will be open from 10am until 4pm on Monday to Saturday. The club says it is grateful to the letting agents Abbott & Frost for making the shop available.
