A huge £6,000 has been raised for local charities and good causes from the sale of books at a temporary shop in Burnham-On-Sea.
Burnham Rotary Club’s book store opened at the start of August and has been so successful at the former Thresher’s Wine Shop in College Street that it is still running.
The club’s spokesman, George Moon, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The unprecedented opportunity given to the Rotary Club, for which thanks are extended to both the owners and the agents Abbott & Frost, has enabled us to raise over £6,000, which will be made available in due course to help local charities and good causes.”
He added: “In addition, the Club has had collection buckets in the shop for donations towards The Rotary Shelterbox Trust, with a Shelterbox on display which has aroused much interest – so much so that it has enabled the Club to send funds to the Trust to pay for Shelterboxes for use in the ongoing crises in Pakistan, Haiti and now Indonesia.”
Each Shelterbox contains a tent, ten sleeping bags, cooking equipment and other
necessaries, plus enough water purification tablets to enable a family of ten to
survive for a month.
The Rotary Club is still welcoming donations of good, clean books at the shop from Monday to Saturday between 10am-4pm. Alternatively, they can be collected locally by arrangement by contacting Rotarian Carol Chalmers on 07887 931354 or Rotarian Tony Russell on 01823 274971.
