A long-awaited new £350,000 park and play area in Burnham-On-Sea will finally open this month after wet weather delayed the opening by five months.
Work to construct the new public park called Rosewood Green, on the site of a former waste landfill site north of Wallace Wells Road, was completed last October but wet weather forced Sedgemoor District Council to delay its opening.
“After being dogged by many setbacks and lately the extremely wet autumn and winter weather, we are delighted to announce that this long-awaited public park will be officially opened on Thursday 21st March,” Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun revealed to Burnham-On-Sea.com this week.
Cllr Gill Slocombe, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, will lead the ribbon cutting ceremony at 10.30am.
“The park was completed in October 2012, but the ground conditions on the recently laid and turfed play area have been waterlogged and any heavy use would have damaged the grass before it had time to establish,” esplained Mrs Faun.
The council has inspected the site on a regular basis to assess the condition of grass and it is only now that it is dry enough for use.
During the project, the contractors have imported new top soil to cover the whole site, installed a network of new footpaths and cycleways, installed seating and litter bins, lighting, seeded a mini football pitch and lawn areas, planted shrubs and a wild flower meadow and installed the new children’s play area.
Sedgemoor District Council earmarked £350,000 towards the project using Section 106 funding received from local property developers.
Cllr Bob Filmer said this week: “It’s great news that the park is opening at long last after a project lasting several years.”
