A brand new long-awaited £350,000 park and play area in Burnham-On-Sea has finally opened today (Thursday, March 21st) after wet weather delayed its launch by five months.
Work to construct the new Rosewood Green public park – on the site of a former waste landfill site north of Wallace Wells Road – was completed last October but the wet weather forced Sedgemoor District Council to postpone its opening.
“After being dogged by many setbacks and lately the extremely wet autumn and winter weather, we are delighted that this long-awaited public park has been officially opened today,” Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Cllr Gill Slocombe, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, led the opening ceremony at the new park this morning, as pictured here.
Gill told Burnham-On-Sea.com “I am absolutely amazed at the range of equipment that children can play on.”
“The whole area is laid out extremely well and it is a fantastic place. I am sure that the children who live nearby are delighted that the play area is now open and ready in time for the Easter holidays.”
She added “The weather has played a large part in the delays in getting the area open – and today is no exception – but nothing can damped the atmosphere here.”
“The park was completed in October 2012, but the ground conditions on the recently laid and turfed play area have been waterlogged and any heavy use would have damaged the grass before it had time to establish,” added Claire Faun.
During the project, the contractors have imported new top soil to cover the whole site, installed a network of new footpaths and cycleways, installed seating and litter bins, lighting, seeded a mini football pitch and lawn areas, planted shrubs and a wild flower meadow and installed the new children’s play area.
Sedgemoor District Council earmarked £350,000 towards the project using Section 106 funding received from local property developers.
