Rooksbridge charity steps up calls for A38 safety improvements

-

A charity which was set up to improve safety along the A38 through Rooksbridge following a fatal accident four years ago has made fresh calls for road improvements.

The charity, Lights for Life, was formed after an accident in 2008 in which 80-year-old resident Gordon Ireland was killed while trying to cross the busy road.

The group has been supported by the Gordon’s widow, Pat, who is backing the campaign for traffic-slowing measures.

“The traffic continues to get faster here and we need to slow it down before another person is seriously injured or even killed,” said David Maund, Chairman of Lights for Life, who is pictured above with Pat Ireland.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have stepped up our campaign and are continuing to fight to improve road safety in the village.”

“Every day large numbers of schoolchildren from both Hugh Sexey and Kings of Wessex schools have to cross the road to catch the school buses.”

“As an adult with a good sense of road safety, I even find it challenging to safely cross the road in the morning.”

The charity has already paid for new village signs and a new pavement for the school bus stop and are now awaiting two vehicle-activated signs to be installed in the coming weeks.

In addition to this, the charity is paying for grass cutting in the village to improve visibility, and is working with County Councillor John Denbee to try and get an island crossing installed.

The charity is holding its Grand Autumn Ball at the Batch Country Hotel in Lympsham on Saturday 3rd November when all will be welcome.

Tickets are priced at £35 per person and include a welcome drink, canapés, a two course meal, live band, casino, grand auction and a prize draw.

The event will run from 7pm to 1am and the dress code will be Dinner/Lounge Suits and Ball Gowns / Cocktail Dresses. For tickets, call 07981 331213, 01934 750243 or 07742 068546.
