Triple roadworks misery angers Burnham-On-Sea motorists

-

Angry motorists in Burnham-On-Sea have this week hit out at the county council for the long delays being caused by three major sets of roadworks going ahead at once.

Commuters say better planning could have avoided this week’s simultaneous diversions and delays caused by the closure of Stoddens Road and roadworks in Love Lane and Berrow Road.

One suffering motorist, Nikki-Lee Hansard from Berrow, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The planning for the roadworks in Burnham has been really bad. I live in Berrow and work in Bridgwater and for me to get to work has been a nightmare.”

“Stoddens Road has been closed, Love Lane has road works and traffic lights and now there are more road works and traffic lights along Berrow Road.”

“These roadworks should have been spread out a little rather than going ahead all at the same time. Better planning would be preferred.”

But Somerset County Council spokeswoman Anna Newman defended the timing.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Where possible all major works in Burnham are scheduled late October to March to avoid the tourist season.”

“This leaves a limited window of opportunity to complete all the schemes and sometimes there is a cross over.”

“For the Wales and West mains replacement schemes on Love Lane and Berrow Road, traffic signals will be manually controlled at peak times to ease traffic movements. They will both run to March. The county council’s earthworks scheme on Stoddens Road is due to be completed this Friday.”
