A road sign near Burnham-On-Sea has finally been fiexd after a two year wait and consultation with 22 separate organisations!
The sign lay hidden in the undergrowth while Somerset County Council consulted with 22 bodies to repair it.
The issue was highlighted by Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt in December when she talked to residents about road safety issues.
It was revealed the council had consulted with National Grid, Network Rail, Bristol Waterworks, Virgin Media, Wales & West Utilities and mobile phone companies Orange and Vodafone about having it repaired.
The sign even became a topic of debate in Parliament when House of Commons leader William Hague described the situation as “barmy”.
Tessa questioned how many other situations of “waste and inefficiency” were taking place throughout Somerset. A council spokesman explained that the reason the sign wasn’t replaced quicker was “because it has no road safety benefit and has had to wait while we do things that we have to consider higher priority.”
But father and son team Andrew and Josh Luke from a local council contractor have now clipped the sign back up over the past week.
One motorist noted, however, that strangely the distances on the new sign have changed even though it’s at the same location!
She also asked why there had been such a long delay and how much it had cost.
