Work to repair the banks of the Huntspill River near Burnham-On-Sea has been underway by the Environment Agency this week.
The Huntspill River Forms part of the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve and, as riparian landowners of the river, the Environment Agency oversee management of the river banks.
The agency has been carrying out work along the river bank in recent weeks to strengthen the banks following erosion.
“The works involved reprofiling the bank face and replanting reeds and withies. The work was necessary due to the erosion of the banks by wind driven wave action,” spokeswoman Clare Frank told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The erosion repair work was required to ensure the safety of the public using our land.”
“In addition we have been able to improve the habitat along this stretch by carrying out the planting works and varying the profile of the bank face.”
Meanwhile, the Environment Agency is currently consulting on its River Basin Management Plan, which is a chance for local people to let the Environment Agency know how they think water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs should be managed in the future. Click here for more details.
